Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be a certified DONA doula after this training? Gerri’s training is the start of the transformation in becoming a birth doula. To be a DONA-Certified Doula (CD-DONA) you first have to become trained at a DONA-approved training, for which Gerri is a DONA International Birth Doula trainer. The training is the BEGINNING of the certification. At the end of class you will receive a certificate of completion which will allow you to go on to finish the certification process. The DONA International website has detailed information about the certification requirements and process.
Is the Introduction to Childbirth class required for DONA certification? The suggestion by DONA for incoming students to consider taking an "Introduction to Childbirth for Doulas” class can be confusing. As part of DONA’s birth doula certification process that will begin after the 3-day training is over, DONA requires that you observe a childbirth class as part of the certification requirements. Gerri offers this for those interested in being a birth worker, but have little to no knowledge of birth, and it takes place the day before the training starts. Keep in mind, this is NOT an Introduction to Doula Work. It's an Introduction to Childbirth and is NOT REQUIRED to take before the training, but does count as part of the certification requirements for those completing certification. There is an additional fee of $150, and it is an 8hr class.
Do you offer Postpartum Doula Training? This is NOT a DONA International Postpartum training, which is a very different skill-set and requires a separate certification. We DO NOT teach Postpartum training, so If you'd like to know more about becoming a Postpartum Doula, please visit the DONA International website.
Do you provide the births required for certification? You are given 3 years to finish your certification to become a DONA Doula following the training. We give you networking and mentoring options in the San Diego community, but cannot guarantee you births. The impetus to build your practice and become a part of the big and benevolent doula community will be just like any entrepreneurial, self-directed business - the more time and effort you put into it, the faster you can network, make money and finish the certification. The good news is that once you take the training, you can charge a fee for service.
